Flew Royal Air Maroc from Europe and Something Went Wrong?

You are not alone – and you are not without options.
If your Royal Air Maroc flight departed from a European airport and arrived more than three hours late, was cancelled at short notice, or you were turned away at the gate without warning, EU law gives you a concrete right to financial compensation of up to €600 per person. Lennuabi makes sure you get it – without dealing with the airline yourself, and without paying anything unless your claim succeeds.

Royal Air Maroc: Morocco’s Gateway to the World

Founded in 1953 and officially named Royal Air Maroc in 1957, RAM is Morocco’s national flag carrier and one of Africa’s most established airlines. Headquartered in Casablanca at Mohammed V International Airport – its primary hub – the airline operates a fleet of over 50 aircraft including Boeing 787 Dreamliners, Boeing 737s, and Embraer jets, flying to more than 90 destinations across Africa, Europe, North America, the Middle East, and South America.

In 2020, Royal Air Maroc became the newest member of the Oneworld alliance, joining the likes of British Airways, American Airlines, Iberia, and Qatar Airways – significantly expanding its global connectivity.

RAM’s European presence is extensive. From Casablanca, the airline operates regular services into Paris (CDG and Orly), Madrid, Barcelona, London, Brussels, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Milan, Rome, Geneva, Lisbon, Munich, Copenhagen, Vienna, and dozens more European cities. It is particularly dominant on France-Morocco routes, serving 11 French destinations alone.

Crucially, many of these European routes – especially those connecting Southern or Northern Europe to Casablanca – fall within the distance brackets that determine your compensation amount under EU law.

What EU Law Says About Your Royal Air Maroc Flight

Morocco is not in the EU – but that is irrelevant. EU Regulation 261/2004 applies to any airline, from any country, the moment its flight departs from a European Union airport. If you boarded a Royal Air Maroc flight at a European gate and something disrupted your journey, you are covered.

From the moment your delay reaches 2 hours, RAM must provide:

  • Free meals and drinks appropriate to the wait
  • Access to phone or email at no charge to you
  • Hotel and airport transfers if you are delayed overnight

When financial compensation applies (delay of 3+ hours at final destination):

Flight Distance

Compensation

Up to 1,500 km

€250

1,500 km – 3,500 km

€400

Over 3,500 km

€600

Royal Air Maroc’s European routes vary in distance, which means your compensation bracket depends specifically on which route was disrupted. Short-haul flights like Madrid to Casablanca (approx. 780 km) fall in the €250 tier, while medium-haul routes like Paris to Casablanca (approx. 2,090 km) or London to Casablanca (approx. 2,090 km) sit in the €400 bracket. Longer connections onward through Casablanca to sub-Saharan Africa or North America push the total journey distance into the €600 tier.

One thing to know: if the disruption was caused by something genuinely outside RAM’s control – a severe storm, a volcanic eruption, or a government security incident – financial compensation may not apply. But the duty to provide meals, accommodation, and communication support remains in force no matter what.

The EU Court Ruling That Changed Everything for RAM Passengers

There is a landmark European Court of Justice case specifically involving Royal Air Maroc – Wegener v. Royal Air Maroc (C-537/17) – that is directly relevant to many passengers.

The court ruled that connecting flights booked under a single reservation should be treated as one journey when calculating compensation. So if you flew from Berlin to Casablanca, then Casablanca to Agadir – all on one booking – and the delay on the first leg caused you to miss your connection and arrive at Agadir more than three hours late, the full itinerary counts. The compensation is assessed based on your final destination arrival, not just the first leg.

This ruling means many passengers who thought they had no claim – because the disrupted flight was short – may actually be entitled to compensation based on the total journey distance. Lennuabi can assess whether this applies to your situation.

Disruption Scenarios: What You Can Claim and When

Arrived more than 3 hours late If your flight touched down at the final destination more than three hours past schedule, and the delay was Royal Air Maroc’s responsibility, you have grounds for a compensation claim. The exact amount depends on the total flight distance.

Flight cancelled with less than 14 days’ notice A short-notice cancellation entitles you to compensation plus a free choice between a full refund or rebooking on the next available flight. If the alternative offered arrives significantly later than your original schedule, your compensation entitlement is not reduced.

Denied boarding due to overbooking Like many airlines, Royal Air Maroc may occasionally overbook flights. If you presented yourself on time, had a valid ticket, and were still refused boarding against your will, you are entitled to compensation immediately – along with rebooking or a refund.

Missed connection under one booking Thanks to the Wegener ruling above, if a delay on your RAM departure caused you to miss a connecting flight under the same reservation, the total journey distance determines your compensation – often pushing the claim into the €400 or €600 bracket.

Strike Disruptions on Royal Air Maroc: Who Pays?

Strikes are one of the most commonly misunderstood areas of EU passenger rights – and how they are handled on Royal Air Maroc flights follows a clear legal logic.

RAM’s own crew or staff go on strike – you can likely claim If pilots, cabin crew, ground handling teams, or other Royal Air Maroc employees take industrial action, this is treated as an internal operational matter. EU courts have consistently held that internal airline strikes do not qualify as extraordinary circumstances – meaning RAM cannot use them to escape compensation. If your flight was disrupted because RAM’s own staff walked out, your claim is valid.

Third-party strikes – compensation may not apply If the disruption was caused by strikes involving air traffic controllers, airport security staff, or baggage handlers employed by the airport rather than the airline, this typically falls under extraordinary circumstances. Royal Air Maroc may be exempt from financial compensation in this case – but its duty of care (meals, accommodation, communication) remains fully in force.

Not sure which applies to your situation? Airlines sometimes communicate strike reasons vaguely. If RAM refused your claim citing a strike without being specific, Lennuabi can investigate whether the cause genuinely qualifies as extraordinary – and challenge the airline’s position if it does not.

Downgraded to a Lower Cabin? Here Is What RAM Owes You

If Royal Air Maroc moved you from Business Class to Economy without asking – that is a downgrade, and it entitles you to a partial refund of the fare you paid for that journey leg.

The reimbursement is calculated by distance:

  • Flights up to 1,500 km – 30% of the ticket price back
  • Intra-EU flights over 1,500 km and other flights between 1,500 km and 3,500 km – 50% back
  • Flights over 3,500 km – 75% back

This refund must be processed without any deduction for taxes, fees, or surcharges. It is entirely separate from any compensation you may be owed for a delay or cancellation, and you are entitled to both if both situations occurred.

Route Distance Guide: How Much Is Your RAM Claim Worth?

Use this to get a quick idea of where your route sits in the compensation structure:

Barcelona – Casablanca

Lisbon – Casablanca

Paris – Casablanca

Brussels – Casablanca

~2,000 km

€400

Copenhagen – Casablanca

~3,000 km

€400

European departure – onward Africa/Americas via Casablanca

3,500 km+

€600

If your journey continued beyond Casablanca to a final destination in West Africa, East Africa, or North America under a single booking, the Wegener ruling means the full distance applies – and that almost certainly puts you in the €600 bracket.

Old RAM Disruption? The Claim Window May Still Be Open

The time limit to file a flight compensation claim varies across EU countries, but in many cases it is longer than passengers realise:

  • UK: up to 6 years
  • Germany: up to 3 years
  • France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands: typically 2 to 5 years

A Royal Air Maroc flight disruption from several years ago may still be claimable today. If you never filed at the time – or didn’t know you could – Lennuabi can check whether the window is still open and take the claim forward at no upfront cost.

What Passengers Should Keep After a Disruption

Pull these together before you submit – it keeps things moving:

  • Booking confirmation or e-ticket reference
  • Boarding pass for the disrupted flight
  • Scheduled and actual arrival times
  • Any messages or emails received from Royal Air Maroc about the disruption
  • Receipts for meals, hotels, or transport you paid for during the wait

Missing a document or two is not a barrier. Lennuabi will advise on what can be sourced later and build the strongest possible case with what you have.
