Are You Eligible for Flight Delay Compensation?
EU Regulation 261/2004 allows passengers to claim monetary compensation for a flight disruption when either of these these circumstances apply:
- Flight canceled without prior notification of 14 days
- Flight delay was longer than 3 hours
- You were denied boarding due to overbooking
Additionally, your flight must have originated from an EU airport or be serviced by an EU-registered carrier and landed within the EU.
Compensation does not apply if a flight delay happened due to extraordinary circumstances – airport worker strikes, bad weather, political unrest, etc.

Your Rights Under EU Regulation 261/2004
Outside of monetary flight delay compensation, Under EU Regulation 261/2004, passengers whose flights experience significant delays may also be entitled to refreshments and communication tools starting from a 2-hour delay.
If the flight is cancelled, you are automatically entitled to one of three options:
- re-routing to the same destination
- later rerouting, at the passenger’s convenience
- a refund of the ticket as well as a return flight to the point of first departure
However, if the airport takes appropriate actions, you may not be entitled to flight delay compensation such as when you were notified more than 14 days before departure or if you were notified later, but re-routed accordingly to avoid significant delays.
