What is Overbooking Compensation?
An overbooked flight occurs when an airline sells more tickets than seats on the plane. When a flight is overbooked, passengers may be denied boarding if no volunteers give up their seats.
If you were denied boarding against your will due to an overbooked flight, you may be entitled to compensation under EU Regulation 261/2004.
Airlines must pay overbooked flight compensation unless there were extraordinary circumstances beyond their control, which isn’t relevant in terms of overbooked flight.

They may also ask you to voluntarily give up the seat for a voucher in case of an overbooked flight. If you accept, you may no longer be entitled to compensation, so make sure it’s a good deal before accepting.
Depending on the flight distance, you can receive between €250 and €600 for an overbooked flight.
However, if your flight is overbooked but there’s another flight coming soon, you may want to take the voucher from the airline to get some compensation immediately rather than waiting a few weeks for the claim to be processed.
If you accepted vouchers or travel benefits voluntarily in the event of an overbooked flight, you might not be entitled to compensation anymore.
Most claims for overbooked flight compensation are resolved within a few weeks, though some may take longer.
If your flight is overbooked and you don’t mind waiting, airlines could offer vouchers for taking the next available flight. This way, you get “compensation” immediately and wait a few hours for the next plane to arrive.
